Racing Dynamics K55 Hurricane Compact (E36)

The Racing Dynamics K55 Hurricane Compact is a deeply modified hatchback based on the BMW 318ti Compact (E36 body).

A V-shaped 12-cylinder engine from the BMW 850Ci was installed on the car. But not standard, but modified, as for the Racing Dynamics K55 Sport Coupe based on the BMW 8-series model (E31 body). Thus, the engine displacement was increased from 5 liters to 5.5, the diameter of the valves was increased, sports camshafts were installed, the engine management program was redesigned, and the exhaust gases were directed through a specially designed Zytek exhaust system. As a result, the maximum power has increased to 427 hp. With. at 5900 rpm, and torque up to 547 N∙m.

Torque is sent to the wheels via a 6-speed Getrag transmission, which was borrowed from the same car; from him - the flywheel and clutch, both reinforced.

In addition, it was decided to abandon the standard BMW 850Ci traction control system, and the engineers abandoned the electric accelerator with which it is linked on the 8 Series in favor of a conventional cable, providing a clearer engine response to the work of the gas pedal.

Chassis tuning was not limited to springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. At the rear, a structure from the BMW M3 E46 was installed: a self-locking differential, a special subframe. The body was additionally reinforced with a massive strut installed at the attachment points of the upper supports of the rear suspension, and longitudinal power elements welded into the bottom. The attachment points of the front suspension have been moved and strengthened: the geometry has been changed to take into account the increased loads. The ground clearance was adjustable.

As a result of all the changes, the car became capable of accelerating to the first hundred in just 4.5 seconds, and the maximum speed increased to 305 kph. According to unofficial data, the car could reach 330 kph, but Racing Dynamics limited the maximum speed to 305 kph to protect their customers from possible consequences.

To keep this "beast" under control, the brakes were seriously strengthened: specially made 4-piston calipers were installed, the front discs were ventilated, and in addition, an anti-lock system was installed.

Exterior changes included new front and rear spoilers, side skirts, streamlined exterior mirrors, and alloy wheels. In the interior, the steering wheel was changed to a sports three-spoke, a gearshift knob appeared and liquid crystal displays were added, as in racing cars, in front of the driver and in front of the passenger.

The cost of the car at that time was $97,478.
