Lotus Cars Limited (England) is a manufacturer of sports and racing cars based in Hethel. The company was founded in 1952 by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman as Lotus Engineering Ltd. Initially, the production was located in the building of the former stables in Hornsey. Since 1966, the production of automobiles has been moved to a modern plant near Hethel. Next to the plant was an old military airfield, which was converted into a test track. In 1986, the company was bought by General Motors, which sold it to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. August 27, 1993. In 1996, a controlling stake was bought by the Malaysian concern Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton), which owns the Malaysian automobile company Proton. In October 2017, a 51% stake in Lotus Cars was acquired by the Chinese concern Geely Automobile.
