Description
Since the production of the Isdera Imperator 108i was coming to an end, work began on the development of a new model. In 1989, the first clay models took shape. The new car was named Commendatore 112i in honor of Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari was awarded the title Commendatore, which means knight commander in Italian.
In 1991, the Isdera Commendatore 112i, powered by the Mercedes-Benz M 120E engine, was first announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show (first used in the Mercedes-Benz C112 concept, and then in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140) and SL600 production models, as well as Pagani Zonda), which, with a working volume of 6.0 liters, produced 408 hp. and torque 540 N∙m. With this engine, the car was supposed to accelerate to hundreds in 4.8 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 320 km/h, with a curb weight of 1400 kg.
Many parts and components were borrowed from production cars such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche as a result of Eberhard Schulz's work at Porsche and collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. For example, the suspension was taken from a Porsche 928, the headlights from a Porsche 968, and the engine and interior parts from a Mercedes-Benz.
The body architecture of the Commendatore 112i is typical for this kind of supercars of its time – a fiberglass body on a steel space frame with a mid-engine rear-wheel drive layout.
Car suspension on double wishbones with anti-roll bars front and rear. BBS forged compound racing wheels on a 8.5J×18 center nut front and 11J×18 rear were shod in Pirelli P Zero tires. Brakes – 4-piston Brembo brake discs 330 mm front and 305 mm rear. In addition, the car was equipped with ABS and ASR systems from Porsche 928GTS and ZF power steering.
Of the technological features - the car was equipped with gull-wing doors and a gull-wing engine cover to facilitate access to the engine. Also retained is the periscope rear view mirror from the Imperator 108i in place of the conventional side view mirrors. Of particular note is the presence of an electronically controlled rear aerodynamic brake that rises 19 degrees when the brake pedal is pressed and an active suspension modified with the help of BBS and Bilstein, which changes the car's ride height by 76 mm (3 inches) at high speeds
In addition, the supercar had a flat bottom and a windshield wiper from a bullet train to improve aerodynamics. The long rear of the car also served to improve airflow around the car. As a result, the car showed a drag coefficient of Cx=0.306 when tested in a Mercedes-Benz wind tunnel.
The car's interior is cramped but cozy, mostly custom-made and contained two-tone black and blue leather upholstery along with Recaro leather sports seats. The car had wide door sills, which housed two fuel tanks. The dials and other instruments (with the exception of the OMP steering wheel) were from Mercedes-Benz, and the speedometer was marked up to 400 km/h. There was also air conditioning and a high-quality audio system.
Limited production of the Commendatore 112i was planned, like its predecessor, and it was reported that each car would take six months to complete. More than 4 million marks were invested in the development of the car by Eberhard Schulz.
The price for the Isdera Commendatore 112i was announced at DM 500,500.
